Going to college webquest! TST2S

You can use all the links and steps below for your university presentation.

http://zunal.com/webquest

Step 1 - College Selection Information (Individual Assignment)

The first step before you decide to enter college is to determine how prepared you are for college admission. Take the "Are You Ready for College, College Quiz". Then, view the "Four Steps to College".

Now, you need to decide where you want to attend college. UK? US? Canada? (Let's just limit ourselves to those 3 possibilities, shall we?!)

You can find help here (US), and here (UK) and there (Canada). Feel free to go to other websites of course!

Now, before you choose your school, you need to understand the US/UK/Can. high education system. --> Research the differences between colleges, universities, community college, etc. --> Record your findings (define each consicely).

Now is the time to choose a postsecondary institution (i.e. college, university, community college, etc.). Choose 1 college or university that you may want to attend. --> Justify your choice.

Things to consider when choosing a college (record all of your answers):

  • Decide on a city that you would like to live in.
  • What would you like to study?  Are you interested in science, business or other fields of study?
  • Are you interested in sports?  That may be an important factor for you when choosing a college.
  • It is important to base your decisions on your personal interests, good judgment and careful analysis of what each college has to offer that will benefit you. This is your life and your future.

Step 2- Cost analysis

You are going to collect data on how much it is going to cost to attend this college/university. There will be two main criteria that you will base your cost analysis on:

  1. Cost of attending college (tuition)
  2. Housing (living in the dormitory or an apartment or renting a room)
  3. [Bonus] Living expenses (food, clothes, transportation, spending money)

You will need to go to the university web site and research tuition fees. The fees will be by quarter or by semester depending on the college you choose.    Deciding on where to live is also an important decision.  You should compare the cost of living on campus to living off of campus.  Go to the web site of the college of your choice and research campus housing.

To estimate what your living expenses would be, you can use the two links below.  The national standards for living expenses is given by the US government. The cost of living by city is a great web site to use to compare the cost of living for two different US cities.  Go to the site and put in (for example) San Diego for the city you live in and choose another city you would like to compare the cost of living to. Do not worry about putting in an annual income, you can leave that part blank.  Once you hit enter, you see a comparison of the cost of living for the two cities that you chose.

Step 3- Record your budget

You can present your information in a table, or use Excel.

  • Tuition rates
  • Room and board expense
  • Estimated cost of books
  • Estimated living expenses.

Step 4- Presentation

Now that you have selected 1 college/university, it's time to work on your presentation.

  • Include the name of the College/University
  • Include the type of college/university
  • Include the location
  • Include the type of living options
  • Include the size of the college/university (student population)
  • Include your reasons for selecting these colleges/universities
  • Include your budget table
  • Include pictures (don't forget to cite the source)
  • Presentation should be at least 12 slides including the title and reference slide
  • Other ideas to consider: Courses, school song, motto, mascot, colors, etc.

You can create a slideshow with OpenOffice, or an interactive presentation with Prezi.com, or Genially, or a video, or...
